Cities and Certificates

Dallas General Liability Insurance: Usually, here in Dallas and throughout the state of Texas certificates of insurance are becoming more common. If you been a contractor for the past 10 years then you realize that it was not a real long time ago that cities did not require you to have a certificate of insurance on file to pull a work permit. For the most part those days seem to be long gone. Certificates (Prof of general liability insurance) are kept on file with the city if that company/person decides to pull a work permit. This has become a common practice in the larger cities and seems to be reaching into the suburbs and a courthouse near you. Meaning the Dallas General Liability Insurance is no longer JUST for the larger contractor.

Here how it goes

Now, the protection scheme here could break down pretty easily but the overall generalization goes something like this: a contractor in your local community does a small job that seems to go wrong and has a claim of the insurance kind. It’s not impossible for someone to say that the contractor was given a permit from the city and therefore this same city is responsible. The certificate of insurance although certainly not a cure-all, could be considered a protection standardization in Texas, a kind of qualification to protect the consumer in your fair city.

Works ever time till it doesn’t

In the natural here in Texas the common driver is probably not going to have an accident any time soon. Yet, you would probably be hard pressed to find anyone who driven over the last 10 years we has not had some type of insurance claim on their automobile. With that being said it’s not common but it is going to happen – enter the insurance. You may not know anyone that has ever filed a general liability claim, however there is no one over the age of 40 that has not filed insurance on their automobile. This may be statistically true, but this is a false security even if it is nestled in side of a low probability. It’s not impossible that there are contractors who have worked without general liability and never had a problem.

Things have changed

Dallas General Liability -1-5For the most part things have changed over the last 20 years, and it’s in short: Just safer to carry general liability. The idea is for protection against a larger claim. As an example let’s look at the very low limit of $100,000 for your general liability. Now the following is a make-believe scenario but you can certainly understand that these types of things happen in the real world: a carport was erected and falls onto a car a week later. Now the damage in our make-believe world is $25,000. For most small contractors there’s going to be a real problem coming up with that amount of money. As a contractor here in Texas take your time and understand your policy before you purchase it, because when there is a claim you need to be sure you have coverage. There are several articles on the same website that talk about covering things such as:

  • Electricians
  • Dry Wall Contractors
  • Painters
  • Handyman
  • HVAC- Hear & Air

Now, each of the above have their own special conditions to be considered in other words, it is really unlikely that a drywall contractor is going to have overspray or that an drywall contractor is going to have an electrical fire. There are conditions and losses which create A substantial statistical blank of numbers wherein some sort of algorithm is created. Meaning it is much more logical that an electrician does not have the same exposures or risk as a drywall contractor. So, the difference in premium is created on the likelihood of loss and the severity of the loss.
